U of W Forge Fitness Centre
2005
This 7,200 sq. ft. Fitness Centre Addition for the University of Windsor was designed by PA Architects to fill an existing void between two existing structures of varying construction on the campus. Technically, only one new wall was introduced for this addition which was designed as a striking curved glass curtain wall. The interior was intentionally left open and exposed as a two storey high voluminous space. The clerestory windows with aluminum light shelves permeates the space with deep daylight penetration providing electrical light shut down procedures to save energy. The large two-storey east facing curtain wall allows for the harvesting of natural daylight but also provides strong visual cues of the new ‘found’ space and captures views to the adjacent park like treed setting of the University of Windsor campus.
